Networks and the Rule of Law: Conceptual Framework

We are pleased to share the first publication from the NET-ROL project: Deliverable 2.1 – Conceptual Framework. This working paper outlines the theoretical foundations that guide our inquiry into how social, political, and economic networks influence the rule of law, and how these interactions, in turn, affect broader socio-economic outcomes.

The framework draws on diverse scholarly traditions – including institutional theory, network research, and literature on democratic backsliding – to map out key assumptions and conceptual connections. Rather than presenting results, this document sets the stage for empirical work to follow, providing a structured lens for analysing the role of networks in shaping the rule of law and its socio-economic outcomes.

The working paper reflects the input and collaboration of researchers across the consortium, and builds on existing scholarship in the field. It is a living foundation, open to critical dialogue and further refinement as the project evolves.
